How to choose: lagoon, beach town or pine forest

In the north, the Aveiro lagoon separates the city from the beaches at Barra, Costa Nova and São Jacinto: you either sleep in town or by the sea. In the middle, Figueira da Foz is the region's big beach town, with Buarcos and Cape Mondego next door. Further south the Leiria pine forest begins, with São Pedro de Moel, and then Nazaré and Peniche — which we cover in more detail in our west coast guide.

The sea is open, cold Atlantic; for young children, look for the lagoon side, São Martinho bay or lifeguarded beaches. Each area has a button that opens an accommodation search for that area, with live prices and availability on our partner's site.

FAQ

Where to stay in Central Portugal by the beach: FAQ

For a town with a beach, Figueira da Foz (beach in front of town) or Aveiro (Barra and Costa Nova about 9 km away). For peace and quiet, São Pedro de Moel. For surfing, Peniche; for calm water with children, São Martinho do Porto.

In Aveiro you have the city, the canals and the train, but no beach on foot — the beaches are about 9 km away, across the lagoon. At Costa Nova and Barra you sleep by the sea, with the lagoon across the road.

Partly. Figueira da Foz has a beach on foot and trains from Coimbra; from Aveiro there are buses to Barra and Costa Nova. For São Pedro de Moel and for exploring the coast, a car is almost essential.

In the official 2025 bathing-season classification (European Environment Agency / APA), almost every sea beach in Central Portugal that we track had “excellent” water; the exceptions were Areinho (Ovar) and Praia da Vieira, rated “good”.
