About the Beach

Nicknamed the "Queen of the Beaches" since the 19th century, Figueira da Foz Beach presents an unusually wide sand strip — at high tide, a visitor walks several minutes from the promenade to reach the water. The beach sits at the mouth of the Mondego River, the longest river flowing entirely within Portugal, which empties here after 234 km from the Serra da Estrela mountains.

The beach is divided into 13 named sections, with the central Praia do Relógio section maintaining Blue Flag status and accessibility for reduced mobility. The Figueira da Foz Casino, one of the oldest continuously operating casinos in Portugal, stands directly on the beachfront — an urban rarity that testifies to the city's tourist vocation since the 19th century.

Easy access via A17 motorway or direct train (Oeste line) from Lisbon-Santa Apolónia. The beach has full infrastructure: toilets, beach bars, restaurants, water sports. Northerly wind is frequent in July and August. Moderate surf conditions; suitable for families and all levels.
