Rules that matter

  • Closed seasons — some species have closed seasons (meagre in June; white seabream in February on the south-west coast), and others — shad, lamprey, eel, groupers, bluefin tuna — cannot be taken by recreational anglers at all.
  • Minimum sizes — fish under the legal size go back in the water.
  • Protected areas — Ria Formosa, Arrábida and the south-west coast have their own rules.
  • Daily limits — there are catch limits per angler and gear limits per line.

Guidance only. Rules change — always check DGRM (sea) and ICNF (inland waters) before each trip.
