About the Beach
Sao Pedro de Moel is a fishing village nestled between the Pinhal de Leiria — the Mata Nacional do Lena, ordered to be planted by King Dinis around 1200 AD — and the Atlantic. This mother pine forest provided the timber that built the caravels of the Portuguese Expansion and became the model for coastal reforestation that spread throughout the western coast in subsequent centuries. Today it is managed by ICNF as a coastal protection forest and leisure area.
The beach alternates between rock outcrops and sand pockets, with natural pools visible at low tide. The northern zone, more sheltered, is frequented by families; the rocky formations in the southern zone create short, hollow waves favoured by local surfers. The shelter of the cliffs softens the dominant north wind.
The village has had a bathing tradition since the 19th century — several Portuguese writers and artists, including Raul Brandao and Eca de Queiros, frequented Sao Pedro de Moel. Raul Brandao's house is open to visitors. Free parking is 5 minutes' walk from the beach.
