About the Beach
Barra Beach is the gateway to the Ria de Aveiro — the large estuary that separates the barrier coast from the mainland. Farol da Barra, completed in 1885, stands 62 metres tall and is the highest lighthouse on the entire Iberian Peninsula; its white light can be seen 28 nautical miles away. The lighthouse is owned by the Hydrographic Institute and open to visitors on specific dates.
The beach extends 8 km south to Costa Nova, making it part of one of Portugal's longest Atlantic sand corridors. Regular medium-to-long-period waves attract surfers year-round; the estuary mouth current occasionally creates short-duration barrel waves during northerly swell.
Accessible from Aveiro by ferry (seasonally) or by road (A17 + IC1). In high season, traffic on the ER109 quickly congests; Aveiro's urban bus services cover the Barra connection at hourly frequency.
