About the Beach
Supertubos Beach in Peniche hosts the MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal, a WSL Championship Tour stop and the only elite WSL event in continental Europe since 2009. The world's best surfers compete here in October, when Atlantic swell reaches peak consistency.
The Supertubos break is a beach break over sandbanks — no reef, no coral — that produces hollow, powerful barrels comparable to Hawaii's Banzai Pipeline. The analogy is not an exaggeration: wave compression over shallow sandbanks creates perfect barrels that cover experienced surfers. This is why professionals call it the "European Pipeline".
The beach is suitable for spectators even without surfing: panoramic views from Peniche's seawall over the waves. Easy access from the EN114. Advanced surfers only in competition conditions; on calm days, accessible to intermediate levels. Peniche has full accommodation, restaurants and equipment hire.
