Where to stay on the Alentejo coast: the best beach bases
From the Tróia peninsula to Zambujeira do Mar there are more than 100 km of almost undeveloped beaches — and small villages a long way apart. We compare 5 bases: who each one suits, honest pros and cons, and the beaches a few kilometres away.

How to choose: Tróia–Comporta, the middle of the coast or the natural park
The Alentejo coast has three parts. In the north, Tróia and Comporta are white-sand beaches backed by pine woods and rice fields, less than an hour from Lisbon. In the middle, Melides and Santo André have lagoons beside the sea and almost no development. South of Sines the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park begins: Porto Covo, Vila Nova de Milfontes, Almograve and Zambujeira, with coves between cliffs and the Rota Vicentina's Fishermen's Trail.
Along the whole coast a car is almost essential: the villages are far apart and public transport is sparse. The sea is Atlantic and cold; for young children, look for river and lagoon beaches. Comporta and Tróia — white sand and pine woods an hour from Lisbon
Comporta is a small village surrounded by rice fields, with white-sand beaches and dunes — Comporta, Carvalhal, Pego — a few kilometres away. To the north, the Tróia peninsula has beaches on both sides, a marina and a casino, and is linked to Setúbal by ferry. It is the part of the Alentejo coast closest to Lisbon: about 50 km from the airport as the crow flies.

Melides and Santo André are the lagoon beaches: Lagoa de Melides and Lagoa de Santo André (a nature reserve) sit right behind the sand, with still water far more sheltered than the sea. The villages are small and the coast between them is almost deserted. It is the choice for silence, if you don't mind driving for everything else.

Porto Covo — a white-washed village with coves on foot
Porto Covo is a village of blue-trimmed white houses around a square, at the start of the Southwest Alentejo Natural Park. Coves, including Samoqueira, are within walking distance or a few minutes away, and Pessegueiro island, with its fort, a little further south. The Rota Vicentina's Fishermen's Trail passes through.

Vila Nova de Milfontes — the most versatile base on the coast
Milfontes sits at the mouth of the River Mira: on the town side there are calm river beaches, and on the ocean side long beaches and coves such as Farol and Furnas. It is one of the best-served villages on the Alentejo coast for restaurants and services, and lies halfway between Porto Covo (about 14 km) and Zambujeira (about 22 km) as the crow flies.

Zambujeira do Mar — cliffs, surf and the wildest Alentejo
Zambujeira is a clifftop village with its beach down below, inside the natural park. Around it are almost empty coves and, to the south, Odeceixe — already in the Algarve — with its beach at the mouth of the Seixe stream. In early August it hosts the MEO Sudoeste festival and the village fills up.

Which airport should you use?
For Tróia, Comporta and Melides, Lisbon Airport is closest (about 50–80 km as the crow flies). For Zambujeira and Odeceixe, Faro is closer (about 90 km), and Milfontes is a similar distance from both. You will need a car along the whole coast.

For most people, Vila Nova de Milfontes: it has calm river beaches and ocean beaches a few kilometres away, and more services than the other villages. Porto Covo is the prettiest village, Zambujeira the wildest and Comporta the closest to Lisbon.
In practice, yes. The villages are far apart, many beaches have no public transport and buses are infrequent, especially outside summer.
The calm-water ones: the River Mira beaches at Vila Nova de Milfontes and the Melides and Santo André lagoons beside the sea. The open-ocean beaches often have heavy surf.
It depends on the area. As the crow flies, Lisbon is about 50 km from Comporta and 78 km from Melides; Faro is about 92 km from Zambujeira do Mar. Milfontes is about 107 km from Faro and 121 km from Lisbon.
In the official 2025 bathing-season classification (European Environment Agency / APA), almost every Alentejo coast beach we track had “excellent” water; the exceptions were two beaches in Sines, rated “good”.
