01–03 · Costa Vicentina
Black shale, red rock and paths that put off anyone who wants to park at the door. That is why they stay empty.
Vila do Bispo
At the northern end, red sandstone sits on shale tilted almost vertical. Tens of millions of years are missing between the two layers.
Before you go. No mobile signal on the sand. Reach the outcrop only at low tide in a calm sea.

Named after a huge reddish rock that rises from the sea between cliffs of black shale.
Before you go. The last stretch of road is rough on low cars. Swim only when the sea is calm.

You walk in through a valley of fig and olive trees. On the clifftop stand the ruins of a fort.
Before you go. Don't lay your towel at the foot of the cliff: rockfalls happen.
04–07 · Lagoa and Albufeira
They sit minutes from the busiest beaches in the Algarve. The difference is the way in: a tunnel, a cliff path, a gravel road.
Lagoa
The only way onto the sand is a tunnel cut by hand through the rock, 500 m from Benagil.
Before you go. Bring a torch: the tunnel is dark and uneven underfoot. Parking is tight.

A headland splits the beach in two and, next to it, the sea has carved an arch over turquoise water.
Before you go. The last 200 m are gravel. At high tide the sand almost disappears.

Two huge sea stacks planted on the sand, and a path of ravines and arches to get there.
Before you go. The path follows the edge of a fragile cliff. Stay on the trail.
Albufeira
Three giant sea stacks guard one of the smallest beaches in Albufeira. Water rated excellent in 2025.
Before you go. On some high tides the sand disappears. Check the tide table before you go.
08–10 · Ria Formosa
White sand between the ocean and the lagoon, with no buildings in sight. Getting there is part of the day: a boat, a footbridge, a little train.
Faro
The only uninhabited barrier island in the Ria Formosa, and the southernmost point of mainland Portugal.
Before you go. There is almost no shade. Check the time of the last boat back before you leave the jetty.
Tavira
At the entrance, around 250 anchors from the old tuna fishery rust half-buried in the dunes.
Before you go. The anchors are corroded iron. Don't let children climb them.
Cacela Velha
You can see it from Cacela Velha's viewpoint. Condé Nast Traveler Spain once ranked it among the 15 best beaches in the world.
No regular boat until May
Before you go. Don't wade across the lagoon: on the ebb the current pulls out to sea. There were about 60 rescues in 2024.
