Praia de Leça da Palmeira is in the Matosinhos municipality, north of Porto, also known for the Piscinas das Marés — tidal pools designed by architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, integrated into the coastal rocks and an internationally recognised work of twentieth-century architecture. Water quality is Excellent. The sandy beach is adjacent to the pools, and the beach combines Atlantic bathing with the option of swimming in the pools on days of rougher sea. The Leça coastline has a character defined by the rock formations that emerge from the sand and by the port context that marks this northern gateway to Porto.
