Jardim do Mar is a small village on Madeira's south-west coast, in the municipality of Calheta, built on a fajã (a low coastal platform) between the cliffs and the sea. The shore in front is pebbles and rock, with no sand. It is best known for surfing: Visit Madeira describes big, consistent and powerful waves that have made it a cult spot for surfers. For swimming in tested water, the village's official bathing area is Praia do Portinho at its eastern end, with a 2026 bathing season from 15 June to 15 September; its water was rated Excellent in 2025.
