About the beach
Small pebble beach at the mouth of the São Jorge stream on Madeira's north coast (Santana), between green mountains that drop to the sea and beside the ruins of the old Calhau settlement. The bathing complex next door has a freshwater lagoon up to about 5 metres deep in places, three pools, a bar-restaurant, showers and changing rooms. VisitMadeira advises against going straight into the sea, especially in the rough conditions common on the north coast. It is not an official bathing water: the water is not tested and there is no lifeguard.
