About the Beach

Nestled within the Arrabida Natural Park, Galapinhos Beach is consistently selected as Portugal's most beautiful beach in national and international rankings (CNN Travel, Conde Nast Traveller, National Geographic). It has no road access — the only route is on foot via the coastal trail (approx. 45 min. from Portinho car park) or by private boat.

ICNF (Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests) limits daily visitor numbers during the bathing season to protect the posidonia ecosystems and coastal caves that frame the beach. The adjacent marine reserve has one of the highest biodiversities on the Portuguese mainland coast — snorkelling reveals depths of 5 to 10 metres with grouper, sea bream and octopus.

Recommended visiting season is June, September and October — less crowded and still warm water. In July and August, the visitor quota fills early in the morning; checking ICNF availability before travelling is strongly advised.
