Ferragudo's beach is Praia Grande, in the municipality of Lagoa, on the last stretch of the Arade estuary. The sand is sheltered by the two breakwaters at the river bar and framed by cliffs whose crests are covered in Mediterranean scrub. To the north stands the Fort of São João do Arade, which together with the Fortress of Santa Catarina once guarded the estuary against pirates; a little further upriver is Ferragudo itself, a former fishing village. Lifeguards are on duty in the bathing season, and the beach has a bar, restaurant, toilets, a play area and parking. MEO Beachcam has a live webcam at Praia Grande.

Good to know
- The Caminho dos Promontórios, a 6 km coastal path with interpretation panels, starts at Praia do Molhe by the mouth of the Arade and follows the coast to Praia do Paraíso, near Carvoeiro.
- In winter, surfers head to neighbouring Praia do Molhe, by the eastern breakwater; access is down a steep staircase of more than 30 metres.
