Beach guide
Praia de Benagil, in the municipality of Lagoa, is a small former fishing beach that now serves mostly swimmers and trips to the Benagil sea caves, including the Algar de Benagil. In summer, local boats run guided cave visits straight from the sand. Since August 2024, rules set by the Portimão harbour master have banned swimming into the algar and landing on the beach inside it. The beach has lifeguards in the bathing season, plus a bar, restaurant and toilets. The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail passes through Benagil on its way to Praia da Marinha, within the Algarve Reef – Pedra do Valado Marine Natural Park.

Good to know
- The only way to see inside the algar is by boat, kayak or SUP. Motor boats stay inside for 2 minutes and nobody may step onto the sand.
- There are no cave visits between sunset and sunrise, or when visibility is under 1,000 metres: navigation in those conditions is banned.
- To see this coast without going on the water, follow the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail (5.7 km from Vale Centeanes to Marinha), which passes through Benagil.
