About the beach

Small beach of coarse dark sand and stones on São Miguel's north coast, between Lomba da Maia and Maia, tucked below a cliff with several springs. It can only be reached on foot: the PR27SMI trail (4.9 km, easy, about 2 hours) starts at the Lomba da Maia church, passes ruined watermills and waterfalls, and drops to the beach down a stone staircase. In rough seas the passage along the cliff becomes difficult, and the water is seldom calm. It is not an official bathing water: the water is not tested and there is no lifeguard.
