About the beach
Saltwater natural pool at Fajã do Ouvidor on São Jorge's north coast (Norte Grande parish, Velas), ringed by tall basalt columns formed as the lava cooled. In January 2026 Velas council published its listing as a Natural Monument of Municipal Interest, which bans new building, changes to access paths and collecting plants or animals. The last stretch is on foot. It is sheltered in moderate seas but exposed to northerly swells. It is not an official bathing water: the water is not tested and there is no lifeguard.
