The Logic of Choosing a Base in the Algarve

The most common mistake is choosing accommodation without thinking about its position along the coast. Staying in Faro looks central on a map but is far from the best central beaches. Staying in Albufeira gives easy access to many beaches but the resort atmosphere may not be what you're looking for. This guide is organised by trip profile, not by price.

Lagos — Best All-Round Base for Exploring

Lagos is the most versatile choice in the Algarve. It sits at the heart of the central Algarve — 45 minutes from Sagres, with easy access to Lagos cliffs, Praia da Luz and Meia Praia. The historic centre has a life of its own without being a tourism machine. For couples and families who want to explore different beaches every day, Lagos is rarely the wrong choice.

Lagos · Best for

Lagos — Ideal Profile

Couples, friend groups, active families. Anyone who wants to explore different beaches daily, based in a historic centre with good food and atmosphere.

Lagos — Accessible Beaches

Dona Ana, Camilo, Praia da Luz (10 min), Meia Praia (5 min), Praia do Amado and Sagres (45 min).

Tavira — Quiet, Culture and Lagoon Beaches

Tavira is often the preferred base of visitors who return to the Algarve for a second or third time — and know what they want. The town is genuine, with intact Moorish-Portuguese architecture and excellent fresh fish. Direct ferry to Praia de Tavira (10 min). For families with young children prioritising calm water, Tavira is hard to beat. See the family beaches in the Algarve guide.

Tavira · Best for

Tavira — Ideal Profile

Families with young children, couples who prefer quiet and culture to nightlife, returning visitors who want the "real" Algarve.

Tavira · Beaches nearby

Tavira — Accessible Beaches

Praia de Tavira (10 min ferry), Ilha de Cabanas, Manta Rota, Cacela Velha. All of the Ria Formosa accessible by car.

Sagres — For Surfers and Atlantic Coast Explorers

Sagres is small, windy and without much nightlife — and that's exactly what makes it the right destination for surfers and those who want the Costa Vicentina. It's 10–20 minutes from the best Algarve surf beaches: Praia do Amado, Carrapateira, Castelejo. See the Algarve surf guide.

Sagres · Best for

Sagres — Ideal Profile

Surfers of all levels, travellers who prefer nature to resort, landscape photographers, anyone who wants sunset at Cabo de São Vicente.

Sagres — Accessible Beaches

Praia do Beliche (5 min), Praia do Amado (20 min), Carrapateira (30 min), Castelejo (15 min), Martinhal (10 min).

Albufeira and Vilamoura — Resort Tourism

Albufeira is the epicentre of mass tourism in the Algarve — with everything that implies. Lots of hotel supply, fully serviced beaches, intense nightlife. For those who want a resort holiday without giving up services, it works well. For those who prefer a more authentic experience, it's probably the wrong choice.

Albufeira · Best for

Albufeira — Ideal Profile

Groups wanting nightlife, families preferring all-inclusive, first Algarve visit with older children.

Vilamoura · Best for

Vilamoura — Ideal Profile

Golf, marina, long sandy beaches with full services. More premium than Albufeira, less old-town atmosphere.

Portimão and Ferragudo — Services Without the Resort Noise

The Portimão/Ferragudo pairing is often underrated. Portimão has Praia da Rocha right on its doorstep, a coastal commercial centre, and a ferry to Ferragudo — a small fishing village that has retained much of its original character. For families who want full services without the intensity of Albufeira, it's a solid option.

Portimão · Best for

Portimão — Ideal Profile

Families wanting full infrastructure without a pure resort feel. Good balance of services, food and long sandy beaches.

Portimão · Beaches nearby

Portimão — Accessible Beaches

Praia da Rocha (5 min walk), Praia de Ferragudo (ferry), Meia Praia (15 min), Praia do Alemão. Easy access to Lagos (30 min).

Frequently asked questions

Questions about Where to Stay in the Algarve

It depends on your trip profile. Lagos is the best all-round base — easy access to cliff beaches and proximity to the Costa Vicentina. Tavira is ideal for quiet lagoon beaches. Sagres is the surfers' choice. Albufeira concentrates resort tourism and nightlife.

Lagos is better for those who want to explore different beaches with an attractive historic centre. Albufeira has more hotel supply but is more resort-like in atmosphere. For couples or active travellers, Lagos is more versatile. For nightlife and all-inclusive, Albufeira works better.

For most of the best beaches, yes. Public transport is limited and the most beautiful beaches are rarely accessible by bus. The exception is urban beaches and the Faro–Tavira train line for Ria Formosa access.
