In the Algarve, the best zones for families are the eastern Algarve (the calm Ria Formosa lagoon beaches) and certain urban beaches in the central Algarve with good access and established facilities. Western Algarve beaches have Atlantic waves — they're not suitable for young children.

Eastern Algarve — Ria Formosa Lagoon Beaches
The Ria Formosa is a protected reserve of lagoons and barrier islands between Faro and Vila Real de Santo António. Beaches here have calm water, minimal waves and, in summer, higher temperatures than open-sea beaches. These are the best beaches in the Algarve for young children.
Access is by ferry or boat from various points — Faro, Olhão, Fuzeta, Tavira. Check timetables in advance, especially in September when boat frequency reduces.

Meia Praia
Four kilometres of flat sand east of Lagos. Relatively calm water, road access, parking, beach bars. Good for older children.
Praia da Rocha
Wide beach in front of Portimão. Full services, lifeguards, easy access. Busy in August but reliable for families.
Praia de Alvor
Estuary beach with calm water and easy access. Good for young children, especially on the estuary side where the water is most sheltered.
Armação de Pêra
Long urban beach with full services, lifeguards and good access. A reliable base for families in the central Algarve.
What to Check Before You Go
- Lifeguards: In high season (June–September) most popular beaches have lifeguard service. Outside peak season, check with the local council website.
- Pram and buggy access: Cliff beaches generally require descending steep steps — avoid these with young children and pushchairs.
- Ferry access: Ria Formosa beaches require a ferry. Check timetables and prices in advance, especially in September when services reduce.
- Parking: In July and August, car parks at the most popular beaches fill before 10am. Arrive early or use available public transport.
- Water quality: Check the beach classification before you go. Most Algarve beaches have excellent water quality, but it's always worth confirming.
