Central Portugal Beaches — Waves, Dunes and Atlantic Coast

From the Peniche headland to the Aveiro lagoon, Central Portugal has some of the country's most iconic beach experiences — Nazaré's giant waves, Supertubos at Peniche, Costa Nova's striped beach houses and the vast urban beaches of Figueira da Foz.

Three Zones, Three Experiences

Central Portugal's coast covers three zones with very different characters. Peniche is a world-class surf destination with Portugal's best barrel wave. Nazaré is globally famous for its winter giant waves, but also has a classic summer beach perfectly suited to families. Figueira da Foz and the Aveiro region have the largest urban beaches in the country — well-equipped, at a scale and atmosphere hard to find elsewhere.

Peniche — Surf Capital of Central Portugal

Peniche is a peninsula with several beaches offering different surf conditions. Supertubos, on the south coast, is the most famous — a world-class sand-bottom barrel, venue for the WSL Championship Tour. For advanced surfers it's one of the best spots in Europe. For swimmers, other beaches on the peninsula (Baleal, Consolação) offer calmer water.

Practical note: The Berlenga Island sits 12 km from Peniche — a natural reserve with snorkelling, diving and dramatic scenery. Ferries operate June to September. Book ahead in August.

Advanced Surf · WSL

Supertubos

Portugal's best barrel wave. Sand bottom, fast and aggressive break. Not suitable for beginners or swimmers.

Families · Easy Access

Praia do Baleal

In the Baleal island lagoon. More sheltered water, good for light surf and families. Surf schools with good beginner conditions.

Sheltered · South Peniche

Praia de Consolação

South of the peninsula, more protected from dominant winds. Good on calm days, less busy than Baleal.

Nature · Diving

Berlenga Island

Natural reserve 12 km from Peniche. Sea caves, snorkelling, lunar landscape. Seasonal ferry — book in advance.

Nazaré — Two Beaches, Two Worlds

Nazaré has two completely different beaches that confuse first-time visitors. Praia da Nazaré (by the village) is a classic summer beach — wide, with beach support, lifeguards and plenty of infrastructure. Praia do Norte, north of the headland, is where giant waves break in winter. In July and August, Praia do Norte has normal surf — the monstrous waves are an autumn/winter phenomenon.

Classic · Summer

Praia da Nazaré

Urban beach with full infrastructure. Very busy in August. Good for families and swimmers, with views of the historic village above.

Giant Waves · Winter

Praia do Norte

Site of world surf records. Normal surf beach in summer. The lighthouse miradouro is the best viewpoint for watching the winter giants.

Sheltered · Family

São Martinho do Porto

Semi-circular bay south of Nazaré with very sheltered water. One of the few enclosed bays in Central Portugal. Ideal for children and beginners.

Historic · View

Sítio da Nazaré

The clifftop plateau above the village with panoramic views over the beach. Reached by funicular or on foot. Excellent for photography.

Figueira da Foz and Aveiro — Urban Beaches and Lagoon

Figueira da Foz has one of Portugal's largest urban beaches — kilometres of wide sand, a historic casino and full infrastructure. Further north, the Aveiro region includes the Ria beaches (Costa Nova, Barra, Mira) with their iconic striped beach houses and the nearby lagoon. Afternoon wind is constant across this coast — mornings tend to be calmer.

City · Large Scale

Figueira da Foz Beach

Enormous urban beach with full services. Very busy in August. Good base for families with older children.

Striped Houses · Iconic

Costa Nova

The colourful striped beach houses are the region's symbol. Long beach, strong afternoon wind. Good for morning walks and photography.

Lagoon · Lighthouse

Praia da Barra

At the entrance of the Ria de Aveiro. Tallest lighthouse in Portugal. Atlantic waves on one side, calm lagoon on the other.

Nature · Dunes

Praia de Mira

Less urbanised than Costa Nova. Preserved dunes, quieter atmosphere. Good option if you want space away from crowds.

When to Visit Central Portugal Beaches

  • July and August: Peak summer. Figueira and Nazaré get very crowded. Peniche is a better option for surf.
  • June and September: Fewer crowds, good weather, water at 17–19°C. The best window for balancing comfort and quiet.
  • October to March: Giant wave season in Nazaré. Peniche has consistent swell for advanced surf.
