About the Beach

Sesimbra beach opens into a south-facing bay sheltered by the Serra da Arrábida foothills — a natural shield that keeps waters calm and 5–8°C warmer than exposed Atlantic beaches. The seafront falls within the Arrábida Marine Protected Area, recognised by the APA for exceptional bacteriological quality.

Sesimbra remains an active fishing village: each afternoon, boats return to the quay adjacent to the beach with the day's catch, one of the last genuinely working waterfronts in Portugal. Above the white houses rises Sesimbra Castle, a Moorish fortress reconquered by King Afonso Henriques in the 12th century.

The sea is suitable for diving and snorkelling; several local dive schools operate near the harbour. The beach has a seasonal lifeguard and accessible facilities for reduced mobility. Parking is very limited in July and August — arrive before 9am or use public transport from Setúbal.
