About the Beach

Located on the western coast of Sao Miguel island, Mosteiros Beach is formed by blocks of black basalt of volcanic origin that create natural pools of clear water, used locally as a sheltered alternative to the open sea. The contrast between the dark lava and the white Atlantic foam is one of the most shared photographic compositions in the Azores.

Mosteiros is the most frequently cited sunset viewpoint on Sao Miguel island — the westward orientation of the cove and the absence of tall buildings on the horizon allow the sun to be captured setting directly into the ocean, sometimes accompanied by the rare "green flash" phenomenon. The village forms part of the UNESCO-recognised Macaronesian Biosphere Reserve.

Access is via Regional Road 1-1a (western Sao Miguel). There is no regular bus service; a rental car journey from Ponta Delgada takes approximately 40 minutes. The natural pools are free of charge; the beach is used year-round by the local population.
