About the Beach
Mira Beach is a narrow sand barrier between the Lagoa de Mira (southern arm of the Ria de Aveiro) and the Atlantic Ocean. On the ocean side, medium-energy Atlantic waves create bodyboarding and beginner-to-intermediate surf conditions; on the lagoon side, the calm shallow water is ideal for children and non-motorised water sports. A motorboat ferry crosses between the two banks of the lagoon.
The palheiros of Mira are the last surviving example at scale of an architectural type that once covered the entire central Portuguese coast — colourful wooden houses raised on pillars to protect against high tides and seasonal flooding. The Mira Municipal Council and the Mira Ethnographic Museum document the way of life of the fishing communities that inhabited these structures.
Mira village is 7 km from the beach, served by Transdev bus. In high season, the beachfront campsites are the most popular option; there is also local accommodation within 500 metres of the sand.
