About the Beach

Esposende is located at the mouth of the Cavado River, one of the major rivers of northern Portugal, creating a dynamic of estuary beaches and ocean beaches separated by just 2 km. The Costa Verde here is wild — the dunes are part of a Natura 2000 network area, with protected dune vegetation including the sea daffodil (Pancratium maritimum) and the sea holly (Eryngium maritimum).

On the plateau overlooking the coast, 3 km inland, stands Cividade de Terroso, an Iron Age hillfort (8th-4th century BC) with preserved walls standing 2 metres tall. The archaeological site, managed by Esposende Municipal Museum, offers a unique vantage point over the coast and the Cavado River with nearly 3,000 years of human history in the frame.

Surfing has a 40-year tradition in Esposende — consistent sandy bottom and northwest swell produce waves of 1 to 2 metres through most of winter. Access is via the EN13 (Viana-Porto); there is a campsite and accommodation near the beach. The town centre, 3 km away, has a daily fresh fish market.
