About the Beach

Espinho is the only Portuguese city whose streets descend directly to the sea, with the municipal gardens ending at the frontal dune — the beach is literally the extension of the urban pavement. The Northern Railway Line (Espinho station) connects it to Porto in 25 minutes and Lisbon in 2h40, making it the most rail-accessible beach in northern Portugal.

Casino de Espinho, inaugurated in 1904, is one of the oldest continuously operating casinos in Portugal, and established the city as one of the first seaside resorts for the Porto bourgeoisie. Along the beach, some of the first surf competitions on the Portuguese mainland were held — the Federacao Portuguesa de Surf continues to organise national championships here.

The southwest swell that enters the beach directly without obstacles creates predictable surf conditions; the sandy seabed is safe for learners. Moderate rip currents form on sand bars in rough sea — identifiable by darker, less-foamy water.
