About the Beach
Carcavelos Beach is the largest ocean beach in Greater Lisbon and, at 1.8 km, the closest to the city centre reachable by train — just 20 minutes from Cais do Sodre. Consistent Atlantic swell, with waves between 1 and 2 metres for most of the year, has made it the main surf training ground in the region, with several clubs and schools accredited by the Federacao Portuguesa de Surf.
At the eastern end of the beach stands Forte de Sao Juliao da Barra (16th century), which in the 20th century was adapted as NATO Headquarters for Southern Europe (STRIKFORNATO) — for decades, the military wing of the transatlantic alliance co-existed with sunbathers 300 metres away. The fortress retains active military functions and is not open to visitors.
At low tide, the beach extends over 200 metres seaward, creating an ideal family sand zone in the central section. Paid parking is available, but CP rail (Cascais Line, Carcavelos station) is the preferred option in high season.
