Calheta Beach
One of Madeira's only sand beaches — sheltered bay with imported sand and the Casa das Mudas contemporary art centre.
Beach Information
About the Beach
Madeira is predominantly rocky volcanic coastline — Calheta Beach is a constructed exception: the natural cove was deepened in the 2000s, and golden sand imported from the Sahara and the Canary Islands covers approximately 4,000 m2. Its position at the southwestern tip of the island guarantees some of the warmest water temperatures on Madeira (22-24 degrees in summer) and fewer windy days.
A few metres from the beach sits Casa das Mudas, one of the most significant contemporary art centres in Macaronesia, built by Madeiran architect Paulo David over the ruins of local stone. The combination of a sheltered beach and cultural offering distinguishes Calheta from the island's other coastal resorts.
Access is via the Via Rapida 1 motorway (Calheta exit), with free parking at the adjacent marina. The marina has mooring and boat hire; there are fresh fish restaurants at the dock. The beach is frequented year-round.
