Lagoa de Albufeira
One of Portugal's largest coastal lagoons — flamingos, rare birds and an Atlantic dune separating lagoon from ocean.
Beach Information
About the Beach
Lagoa de Albufeira is a unique coastal system in Greater Lisbon — a 3 km lagoon separated from the ocean by a natural sand tongue (dune cord) that is periodically opened in high-rainfall years to renew the water. The lagoon and its surroundings are classified as a Special Protection Zone (ZPE) under the EU Birds Directive.
The ornithological richness of Lagoa de Albufeira is documented by BirdLife — flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus), herons, black-winged stilts and coots are spotted regularly, especially in winter. The lagoon is one of the main breeding and wintering areas for wading birds on the Portuguese Atlantic coast.
On the ocean side, the beach stretches approximately 8 km and lateral currents make some sections unsuitable for swimming. Access via Quinta do Peru (Azoia) offers free parking and a 1.5 km marked path through the dune to the lagoon. Bring binoculars for birdwatching.
